Flash Cosmetics Pitch at in-cosmetics Global

In April, Johnson & Johnson Innovation were active participants at in-cosmetics Global, the world’s leading event for personal care ingredients. Over 700 international exhibitors and 8,000 industry insiders attended the prestigious event in London, providing networking opportunities and potential to discover new products over the 3 days.  

J&J Innovation organized the first ever Flash Cosmetics Pitch, a competition for emerging startup companies in the beauty technology and cosmetics science space. Specifically, Flash Cosmetics Pitch event was seeking applications from companies with novel innovations in six beauty technology categories – energy based devices, personalisation, anti-ageing, microbiome, digital beauty and naturals. After a frenzied lead up to the event, the challenge generated 50 applicants, from which 11 successful companies from UK, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Taiwan, S Korea, USA and Canada were selected to pitch live.

 

On the first day of the show, a packed audience of over 50 delegates and journalists heard the finalists present their 3 minute pitches to the panel of business and scientific experts from Johnson & Johnson Innovation and Johnson & Johnson Consumer.

After much deliberation, John Bell, Vice President, R&D External Innovation,

Johnson & Johnson Consumer announced Nuritas, a digital biotech company from Ireland, as the Winner. They impressed the judges with their discovery of peptides from natural plant sources using artificial intelligence and DNA analysis. The company will receive mentorship from Johnson & Johnson Innovation and an award of €5,000 to put towards furthering their idea.

At the Show Awards Ceremony the following day, Caroline Neville, President of CEW UK, invited Jennifer Zhu, VP Global Beauty R&D at Johnson & Johnson Consumer to the stage where, in front of an excited 500 strong audience, she presented Nutrias with the award.

Flash Cosmetics Pitch was a fantastic opportunity for Johnson & Johnson Innovation to continue our drive to discover and collaborate with new and emerging external technologies. By being part of in-cosmetics Global, we could engage with early stage start-ups in the cosmetic science and beauty technology industry. Roll on New York!
